FC Taraba Paid Two Months’ Salaries

first_imgTroubled FC Taraba players were on Tuesday paid two of their 11-month salaries by the financiers, Taraba state government. The financiers could not muster enough cash to offset the bill as agreed with the governor last week, but asked the distraught players to come back on Tuesday for the February and March 2015 salaries. The Commissioner for Youth and Sports personally supervised the cash payment to the players with some ministry personnel in attendance. The women football team, FC Taraba Queens, were also paid for two months’ worth of salaries. The players of the mainstream side slept in the open for 11 days while peacefully protesting over the nonpayment of their salaries. However, only players who played a full season in the 2014/15 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season received the two months’ salaries as opposed to those who joined the Jalingo outfit mid-season who got just one month worth of salaries — the same as players who played the first round before seeking greener pastures elsewhere. The players were however not told when the outstanding salaries would be paid as they left for their respective homes. An unnamed player said they were helpless in the whole situation, but happy that at least there is little cash in their hands right now.“The truth is that everybody needed the money; no matter how small it is, at least it’s better than nothing so the issue of whether one is happy or not does not arise at the moment.“We would have been very happy if the government had paid at least half of outstanding salaries as the two months’ worth of salaries cannot go far to clear the accumulated debts.“Nothing has been mentioned on the outstanding nine months whether it will be paid or not or if so, when,” said the unnamed player to supersport.com.FC Taraba was demoted to the second tier league — Nigeria National League (NNL) — together with Kwara United, Sharks and Bayelsa United at the end of the outgoing NPFL season. Phase Two of US$40M Substantial Water Project Enters Final Stage

first_imgLWSC facilities in the Soul Clinic communityThe final Phase of a US$40 million Urban Water, Sanitation and Supply Project (UWSSP), funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), has entered its substantial completion inspection stage. The project’s manager Gabriel S. Flaboe on Monday, April 23, led a team of water engineers, representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) and contractors of a Chinese construction firm to the New Georgia and Soul Clinic water and sanitation projects.During the inspection, engineers from the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) and representatives from MFDP filled out questionnaires regarding some of the minor technical problems at the facilities. However, members of the combined teams of inspectors observed some challenges in one of the communities that was said to have rejected the construction exercise.Mr. Flaboe puts the cost of the two projects at US$3.8 million. In addition, Flaboe said that the total cost of the sanitation component is about US$690,000 and the facilities are up to technical and durable standards. At the Soul Clinic newly-constructed water tower, he said the water storage capacity of the elevated tower is expected to hold 105,668 gallons and the height is 45 feet.He further added that prior to the construction of the facilities in the two communities, the entity’s experts carried out an environmental assessment to determine the hygienic conditions of the areas.Mr. Flaboe expressed delight for the commencement of the project because, according to him, the contractors were able to meet up with time line as provided in the documents.“We committed ourselves to work for our country; therefore, we will always ensure that quality work is done for our people,” Flaboe said.Due to challenges in the projects’ implementation, Mr. Flaboe stressed the need for lawmakers of the affected communities to prevail on residents to accept “the golden opportunity” of benefiting from safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities.Meanwhile, Mr. Flaboe commended all stakeholders to the projects for their commitment, cooperation and hard work in ensuring that the two projects are completed on time.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Flooded Canal No 2 farmers request fertiliser assistance

first_imgPicking up the piecesFarmers in Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD) who suffered losses at the hands of heavy rains last week are urging the authorities to provide assistance for them to continue farming. On Monday, Guyana Times was told that the flood waters are continuing to slowly recede in several sections of the community. Reports indicated that the tractor and workmen with cutlasses continued to conduct clearing of moss and grass in the canal. However, farmers are still contemplating their next moves to return into the field. On a visit to the area on Saturday, this newspaper was told of the millions of dollars in losses that the farmers incurred. According to cash crop farmer, Imran Bashk, they were already facing financial challenges from rising production costs and many had called on the agriculture ministry to ensure that farmers in the area get adequate assistance for fertilizers and other chemicals. Bashk noted that farmers in his community would welcome engagement from the National Agricultural Research & Extension Institute (NAREI).“The Minister of Agriculture need to come out and meet the people; cane, rice and cabbage not planting in [his] office; come here and see what we planting, bring NAREI to see the farmers here,” the cash crop farmer urged.Earlier this month, the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) created a credit system for farmers to access fertilizer and repay the board at the end of each crop. The cash crop farmers expressed hope for the ministry to implement a similar financial arrangement for them to restart farming.Farmer Imran Bashk standing in a flooded field on Saturday“If you go IPED, what [will you get]; take $ 200,000 and mortgage your house again,” Bashk questioned.“Government must come with something, give we seed, fertliser, chemical so we can do something and it’s not me alone, is a hundred like me in Canal here. I begging for that help,” the cash crop farmer further noted. On Saturday the flooding which was spurred on by intense heavy rainfall over a five-day period caused inundation to homes and farmlands in the area. South Section farmer Dookie (only name) told this newspaper that some 200 of his pear crops which he planted 15 months ago are threatened. He had also explained that it was only weeks ago that he invested around $1 million to excavate his drains in preparations for the heavy rainfall but his peppers and pakchoy were all destroyed. Many of the farmers blamed the local NDC and Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for ignoring their numerous complaints and Guyana Times reported that the flooding could have been avoided if the tender board had facilitated the contract being awarded for drainage works in the area. This publication was informed that previously, a former large scale sugar cane farmer was granted monthly contracts for clearing clogged drains over the years. However, changes in the tendering process awarded the contract to several contractors instead. It is this back-and-forth that many believed was responsible for the flooding. The farmers reported that they have not seen such water levels since the 2005 floods.last_img read more

Modric reaches Spanish tax settlement

first_imgIn January, the 33-year-old gave evidence to a court that he had already paid tax authorities close to one million euros — the sum he allegedly evaded plus interest, a judicial source told AFP at the time.According to El Mundo, which is consistently well-informed on tax fraud issues involving footballers, the deal reached with prosecutors involves him paying a fine that represents 40 percent of the amount allegedly evaded — or just under 350,000 euros.Modric can also convert his jail sentence to another fine of 250 euros a day, which would total around 60,000 euros, the report said. That would come on top of the one million euros he already paid, it added.Neither prosecutors nor the court involved in the case would comment when reached by AFP.The news comes just two days before football’s world ruling body FIFA awards its best player of the year prize, for which Modric is a finalist along with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.Modric is also a firm favourite for the Ballon d’Or, the prize awarded by France Football magazine to the world’s top player as voted on by journalists around the globe, in December.A number of high-profile players have fallen foul of Spanish tax authorities in recent years.Like Modric, some have reached deals.Cristiano Ronaldo, for instance, accepted to pay 18.8 million euros and receive a two-year jail sentence that he will not have to serve.Spanish tax authorities eventually reduced the amount he had to pay to 16.7 million euros, El Mundo recently reported.Lionel Messi, though, went to court where the Barcelona star was fined 2.1 million euros for tax fraud and given 21 months in jail, which was subsequently converted into another fine.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Luka Modric will reportedly pay a fine of 350,000 euros © AFP / GABRIEL BOUYSMADRID, Spain, Sep 22 – Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has reached a deal with Spanish prosecutors, admitting he evaded taxes and agreeing to an eight-month jail sentence likely to be converted into a fine, daily El Mundo reported Saturday. The Croatian star, one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or in December, has been accused of evading 870,728 euros ($1 million) on revenue from his image rights in 2013 and 2014 via a shell company set up in Luxembourg.last_img read more

MacLOCHLAINN TURNS ON GOVERNMENT OVER PROMISES TO VOLUNTARY SECTOR

first_imgSpeaking on a Sinn Féin Private Members Business Motion in the Dáil last night, Donegal North East TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn called upon the Government to keep the pre-election promises they made to the Community and Voluntary Sector.Deputy Mac Lochlainn said the consensus for cuts, established by Fianna Fáil is now being led by Fine Gael and Labour. He said: “The community and voluntary sector, despite it’s proven track-record and value, has been disproportionately targeted by government cuts since before the recession even began. Even when public spending went up in 2009, the then Government still cut the sector’s funding, with the new Government quite happy to keep up this tradition. “Organisations in the community and voluntary sector have suffered cutbacks on average of around 20% with high value organisations focused on anti-poverty work such as the Community Workers Cooperative losing 100% of their funding as a punishment for speaking out against government policy.“These funding cutbacks have not only ensured unemployment for thousands of people, but resulted in a marked deterioration in the lives of thousands of others as the community sector is no longer able to sustain the same levels of activities and services they provide. I would remind the Government that these are the same services that the community sector are providing because the State has so absolutely failed to do so themselves.“Fianna Fáil could not expect anyone to believe that they supported the community sector when they were inflicting this level of cuts, and Fine Gael and Labour cannot seriously expect us to believe that they are supporting the community sector when they clearly have no intention of reinstating the level of funding that is needed.“I would also like to take this opportunity to commend those who are working in the community and voluntary sector, both in paid and voluntary capacities. These are the people who have to face the reality of, and make up the shortfall for the Government’s ‘on a wing and a prayer’ attitude to policy making in this State. “People are over-working in terrible conditions, providing services for people who are very often living in terrible-conditions, for low pay, or no pay, and trying to make slashed budgets stretch as far as humanly possible.“Cuts to the community sector are part of a larger deflationary austerity plan. They are doing irreparable damage to our vital community infrastructure which has taken years to build up. The consensus of cuts having been embarked on by Fianna Fáil, is now supported by Fine Gael and the Labour Party with communities suffering from the cumulative effect of cuts to public spending, cuts to public services, cuts to minimum wage and cuts to community-based services.”MacLOCHLAINN TURNS ON GOVERNMENT OVER PROMISES TO VOLUNTARY SECTOR was last modified: October 13th, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Deputy Padraig MacLochlainnlast_img read more
