Guyana receives US$1.7M from GPE

first_img…to improve childhood education in remote areasGuyana has received a grant from Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to the tune of US$1.7 million to improve the Early Childhood Education Programme in Regions One (Barima-Waini), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and remote riverine communities over a three-year period.Education Minister Nicolette Henry meets with several stakeholders to review education planThe contribution came after the independent consultancy group tasked with evaluation and strengthening national education systems concluded their Guyana Country Mission.During their engagement with Education Minister Nicolette Henry, the consultants heaped praises on Guyana for its use of the grant received. Though small by world standards, it was dubbed as “impactful” to improve early childhood development particularly, for communities out of Georgetown.Furthermore, the project has been effective through the delivery of resource learning kits which have been deemed as “impressive and impactful”.Minister Henry in expressing gratitude spoke of Government’s emphasis on the importance of the gains and the sustainability of such interventions. The sustainability is already in progress as this year’s budget has made provision for kits to be made available to schools on the coastland. The Education Minister also noted that multi-stakeholder engagements are community-based with a partnership approach via initiatives such as town hall meetings with parents and local partners which have been very useful.“We (Government) are looking at reviewing the education sector plan for the year towards 2019 when the information collected would inform the forward thrust of the education sector. We are also engaged and continue to interface with key sectors that don’t always have to be a formal setting to address the needs of all Guyanese to gather relevant information to inform decision-making.”The Minister was informed that the GPE also offers grants to fund consultations which could be tapped into, to which Minister Henry expressed elation that the team has engaged the senior officers and other stakeholders. I believe that it will be beneficial to aid the process of Education advancement from the coast to the Hinterland.Prior to the Minister’s debriefing, a team of education officials, including Chief Education Officer Marcel Hutson and the Chief of the Planning Unit Evelyn Hamilton were part of a summative evaluation of Global Partnership for Education’s (GPE) contribution to strengthening national education systems. The mission in Guyana was conducted from April 9-18, 2018.The purpose of the evaluation is not intended to assess whether Guyana has achieved the outcomes outlined in the 2014-2018 Education Sector plan (ESP). It is aimed at determining the extent to which GPE support has been relevant, effective and efficient in helping to strengthen Guyana’s Education sector. The meeting focused on key messages that emerged from the interviews conducted during the team’s visit. These interviews are only one part of the team’s data collection. These are being completed by a systematic review of relevant documents, sector data and literature.Stakeholders engaged included officials from the Education Ministry, the Finance Ministry, and the Teaching Service Commission, development partners, civil society and the Private Sector.last_img read more

Salah set to start against Saudi Arabia as Egypt target win

first_imgEgypt coach Hector Cuper said he would not tinker greatly with the starting XI that were dumped out of the tournament 3-1 by hosts Russia on Tuesday.“The manager needs a reason to make changes,” Cuper told reporters before Salah took part in a full training session at the Volgograd Arena. “We are not going to change our style.”An appearance for El Hadary would smash the age record set by Faryd Mondragon in Brazil four years ago.The Colombia goalkeeper was 43 years and three days old when he played against Japan in a 4-1 group stage victory in Cuiaba. But the 158-capped El Hadary said he did not know if he would play.“I will be very happy if I participate and set the record,” he said. “But it is not certain.”Cuper made it clear that he considered it important for Egypt’s future to register a first-ever win at a World Cup and he would field his strongest side.“We must bow out in style,” he said.Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida earlier denied media reports Liverpool had put pressure on them to leave out Salah, who scored 44 goals for the English Premier League club last season.“No, we did not receive anything from Liverpool,” he told AFP.“When the player is with the national team, it is for us to decide,” he said in Grozny, Chechnya, before the team travelled to Volgograd.Salah was slammed to the turf by Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final on May 26 in Kiev, causing a painful shoulder injury. The talisman and national hero faced a race against time to be fit for the World Cup, sitting out the opening defeat against Uruguay. He started and scored a late penalty in the 3-1 defeat to Russia but looked a shadow of the player who starred for Liverpool.Russia and Uruguay have already qualified for the knockouts and will kick off their battle for top spot in Group A in Samara at 1400 GMT, the same time as the Saudi-Egypt match.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Mohamed Salah trains with the Egypt team in Volgograd © AFP / NICOLAS ASFOURIVOLGOGRAD, Russian Federation, Jun 24 – Mohamed Salah looks likely to start against Saudi Arabia in Volgograd on Monday as Egypt go in search of a first-ever World Cup win in a battle to avoid finishing bottom of Group A.But Egypt’s 45-year-old goalkeeper Essam El Hadary may have to wait for an appearance off the bench to set a record as the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup.last_img read more

BLOW AS CREDITORS REJECT BID TO SAVE CREESLOUGH BUSINESSES

first_imgTwo creditors meetings involving the Lafferty Enterprises in Creeslough have rejected plans by the Examiner to save the family business.People have held a meeting to support Mr LaffertyThe Tirconail Tribune reports this morning how the rejection has dealt a severe blow to businessman Danny Lafferty and his family. They will appear in the High Court on Friday to hear if the business has a future at all. The meeting, which was held yesterday, heard claims from various creditors who are owed as little as €600 to one creditor who is owed more than €220,000.However Mr. Seamus Farren of Farren Roarty, Chartered Accountants had presented proposals to save the Lafferty companies to creditors meetings at the Silver Tassie Hotel amid much speculation that a yes vote would go a long way towards securing the High Court’s support to prevent the business being liquidated. The plan would see unsecured creditors write off 95% of their debts while the preferential creditors would take a cut of 90%.Secured creditors at the Lafferty Supermarket and the Corncutter’s Rest are owed €669,254. One contingent creditor is owed €452,089. The preferential creditors include the Revenue Commissioners and Donegal County Council and redundancy payment for two workers. The liability in this category is €111,466.Read the full story on a Donegal village’s battle to survive in today’s Tirconail Tribune.  BLOW AS CREDITORS REJECT BID TO SAVE CREESLOUGH BUSINESSES was last modified: May 30th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:CreesloughDanny LaffertyExaminerlast_img read more

Fuming Monk blasts Leeds’ second half ‘softness’ after home defeat

first_img Garry Monk was fuming after a second successive loss as Leeds manager 1 Garry Monk was furious in the aftermath of Leeds’ 2-1 home defeat to Birmingham, blasting his player’s ‘softness’ in the second half. The loss comes a week after they were beaten 3-0 by QPR on the opening day of the Championship season. And they were behind at Elland Road after just 15 minutes when Birmingham took the lead through Jacques Maghoma, who calmly fired home after a superb counter-attack.Leeds got the equaliser their superior possession and energy deserved when Hadi Sacko scored thanks to a blunder from goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak on 27 minutes. But Birmingham were a different proposition after the break and got their reward 10 minutes after the restart when Michael Morrison smashed home from six yards after Leeds failed to clear a corner.Kuszczak then made amends for his early blunder when he turned away Stephen Gleeson’s sliced clearance and saved well from Marcus Antonsson in the closing stages.“I did not like that softness and I told the players that,” Monk fumed. “When you are on the pitch you have to be a man, you have to put your body on the line and suffer.“We gifted that game to Birmingham and I will not accept that. We did not have the determination and desire we needed in the second half.“We have a young group of players, but you are in a man’s world and you have to do more than that.“We are not here to put cotton wool around anyone. The players have the capability but they have to grow up and grow fast.“They have to have a strong mentality. The better mentality you have, the higher up the league you go.“We have to be mentally stronger in situations like today. Birmingham were not doing much, they then put more battle into it and they got something from it.”Delighted Birmingham boss Gary Rowett hailed his side’s defensive resilience and character.“We got into good areas often and limited Leeds in the second half,” he said. “We were very strong and it suits us playing away from home.“Leeds did well in the first half and caused us bother with their runners.“We showed character in the second half and were in control of the game, We did not look under threat, only when we caused ourselves trouble.“It was a really strong, organised and tactically concentrated performance.“I thought we saw the game out very professionally. We know what we are as a team and we are getting better at it.“The keeper is disappointed with the goal, he made a mistake, players make mistakes and you hope they don’t make too many.“He shouldn’t have scored from there but it was an honest mistake and I will support him. Leeds were bright and I’d be disappointed if I was Garry Monk to have lost the game.”last_img read more
