Mallya’s advertisement leaves Harbhajan’s mom fuming

first_imgAce off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, aka The Turbanator, is not in high spirits. This time around, he is the one facing the doosra – a commercial from Vijay Mallya’s UB group which is a spoof on Harbhajan’s ad for a rival liquor brand. Worse, Team India captain and close friend Mahendra Singh Dhoni features in the latest UB ad.Harbhajan Singh’s mother Avtar Kaur claims the UB group advertisement insults the spinner. As the liquor wars spill over into the cricket field, one person who is not amused by the commercial ridiculing her son is Harbhajan’s mother, Avtar Kaur. She has sent a legal notice to Mallya, claiming that the commercial not only makes fun of the spinner, but also his family and the Sikh community as a whole. The advertisement features Dhoni and a Harbhajan look-alike and pokes fun at the off-spinner. It takes off on a commercial for Royal Stag soda, which was a surrogate ad for its liquor brand. In the original commercial Harbhajan talks about the struggles in his life and coming to his late father’s ball bearing factory and is shown contemplating: ‘Have I made it large?’ – the punchline of the spirit. However, in the spoof, a Bhajji lookalike is depicted sitting in a factory of ball bearings, asking the same question – ‘Have I made it large?’ After which, another person slaps the lookalike, cursing and deploring him for making the ball bearings of gargantuan size. Dhoni then takes over and announces, ‘Large chhoro, kuch alag karo (Forget large, do something different)’.advertisementEfforts are being made to ensure that the relations between the two heroes of India’s World Cup win do not sour.Off-Spin Sports and Entertainment Director Sangeet Shirodkar told PTI that Harbhajan is not involved in the issue personally. “Bhajji has been totally kept out of this… and his friendship with M. S. Dhoni has not been impacted in any way… they are still very good friends,” Shirodkar said.In the legal notice, the off-spinner’s mother claims the advertisements can bring ‘disunity’ in the Indian team and should be labelled ‘anti-national’. One of Harbhajan’s lawyers, advocate Shyam Dewani, explained that more than the cricketer, it was his family which was upset at the entire episode. The suit also demands that Mallya’s company first remove the advertisement from the public domain within three days of receiving the notice and also issue a public apology in major newspapers as well as television channels. The McDowell’s ad spoofs Harbhajan Singh where his look-alike (top) claims to have made it large, only to be slapped by his father and later lampooned by India skipper MS Dhoni.”My client is serving you with the instant notice to give you an opportunity to accept your mistake and make amends. Failing this, we will have no other alternative than to take appropriate legal action including that of filing proceedings for defamation, damages and all such civil as well as criminal actions,” the notice, signed by Dewani, said. Those who have been sent notices are UB executive vice chairman S. R. Gupte, president & CFO Ravi Nedungadi, deputy president Harish Bhat and executive VP (corporate affairs) Nandini Verma. The suit also seeks a compensation of ` 1 lakh towards the cost of the notice. While, Bhajji’s family is upset that members of the Sikh community were offended by the ad, the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) did not take exception to it. “This is a personal matter between two individuals.I don’t look at it as more than a joke,” Paramjit Sarna, president of the DSGMC, said. However, not many are sure whether two sporting icons should endorse liquor brands.Surrogate advertising is one way in which companies can promote their spirits. This is done through other products like club soda and music CDs, using the same branding. The information and broadcasting ministry had amended the Cable Television Networks Rules in 2006, laying down stringent guidelines for advertising products using the very same logos as those used for alcohol and tobacco products. However, the change does not seem to have effectively stopped surrogate advertising.Though it is difficult to stop the companies from using such surrogate ads, the cricketers can themselves take a moral stand and not feature in them, as it is obvious what they promote can influence millions of their fans.Earlier this year, there were protests in Chennai where Pasumai Thayagam, an NGO, asked Dhoni not to promote alcohol. Interestingly, Sachin Tendulkar had refused to sign a mega deal with a liquor brand on moral grounds.advertisementThis isn’t the first time that Harbhajan has been involved in a controversy surrounding liquor commercials. In 2006, Harbhajan had to apologise to the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) for wearing his hair open in an advertisement for a liquor brand.Dhoni and Harbhajan are integral to the team and the latest incident might not be the best thing to happen while the team is about to face England in a four-match series where India’s No. 1 Test ranking is on the line. Dhoni might plead ignorance in the case, but the fact remains that the joke is on Bhajji.last_img

From mud to mat- wrestling Indian style

first_imgThe sun was blazing down from above. On the ground people had gathered, braving the heat, to catch a spectacle which was quite removed from sundry life.Shortly, two heavyset men arrived amid cheers from the onlookers. They entered an arena where a man presented them to the crowd. The man in question was the referee of the show. Known as a ‘khalifa’, he raised the arm of each man and announced him to the crowd – ‘Krishan pehelwan Chandgi akhade se’, ‘Kapil pehelwan Guru Jasram akhade se’. The wrestlers exchanged a handful of mud, patted their thighs and launched into attack. The Bamheta dangal is an annual event held in the honour of a local deity   This is wrestling Indian style. Popularly called kushti, these are bouts fought in local wrestling events called ‘dangal’. The dangals are where wrestlers from various akhadas compete and are the breeding grounds for state, national and international level wrestlers. This particular dangal happened at Shahpur Bamheta, a village near Mehrauli in Ghaziabad, located nearly 30 kilometres from the Capital. The Bamheta dangal is an annual event held in the honour of a local deity. Organisers claimed the event is nearly half-a-century old, though regular participants dated the real fame of the event to the last five-six years, perhaps from the time when Sushil Kumar first won a bronze in 2008 Beijing Olympics and popularised the sport. Around 600 wrestlers come from various parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and many claim to have been inspired after watching Sushil wrestle in such dangals in his heydays.advertisementOlympian Sushil Kumar was a regular at this dangal  The whole affair starts by collection of funds. From the tents and public address systems to the prize money, every penny comes in the form of charity from the locals. Wrestlers from one locality and akhada challenge their counterparts from other akhadas for the prize money.Bouts start from a two-minute, Rs 50 limit and increases gradually by a minute each, as better wrestlers take to the pit. Money in this case touched a maximum of Rs 51,000 with the 15-minute final bout between ‘Vicky pehelwan’ and ‘Birju pehelwan’.Money has always been scarce in this sport and one way to generate it is to place bets on one’s favourite wrestler. A fighter sponsored by one person or his akhada declares a challenge of a particular amount open to anyone from the audience. Fighters, sponsored by other camps, awaiting this opportunity run towards him and the first person to grab the challenger’s hand gets to fight him. Bouts ranging from Rs 2,100 to Rs 21,000 are fought, which essentially can be described as gambling.Spectators watch a dangal at Shahpur Bamheta, a village near Mehrauli in Ghaziabad  “I was a four-year-old when I saw Sushil for the first time in a bout at Badarpur. He was a champion in those times as well and would win the highest cash prize bouts, which at that time was around Rs 3,000. Sushil and Yogeshwar Dutt were regulars at dangals,” Kapil, a youth who trains at KD Jadhav stadium daily and once in a while participates in local wrestling events, reminisced.last_img read more

Newly-appointed as chairman of ICC Kumble to try out fresh ideas

first_imgNew chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee Anil Kumble says he would bring fresh and modern ideas to the table to help take the game forward at the global level, besides meeting the various challenges it faces currently. The former India captain realises that his newest job is a big responsibility, but at the same time he is happy that he has an opportunity to give cricketers’ perspective to the policy making at the top.”It’s a great honour to be part of the ICC Cricket Committee. It’s a great responsibility. The people who have chaired the meetings [of this committee] have been the legends of the game,” Kumble told Mail Today. The former ace leg-spinner was referring to his predecessors and ex-captains Sunil Gavaskar and West Indies’ Clive Lloyd who had previously chaired the committee. “It’s a recommendatory committee and people listen to what this committee says. I am aware of the responsibilities and I am sure we will be able to bring in cricketers’ perspective into this whole thing. We will look at various challenges that cricket faces,” he said. “And also try and bring in some fresh ideas as well. That’s the whole objective – the game moving forward. That’s the most important thing.”Kumble said he will work in tandem with his co-members on the panel.”Hopefully, I will be able to bring in new and contemporary ideas to the cricket committee. I have just seen the current list of members and I see some colleagues of mine,” said Kumble who turns 42 on Wednesday. He was pointing to Andrew Strauss, Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, Tim May, Gary Kirsten, and Ravi Shastri.”I would like to interact with them and understand their views and challenges that a particular country face. It will be nice to interact with them on a global platform,” he said. Before being appointed head of the BCCI technical committee 10 days ago, the Bangalore-based Kumble also chaired a six-member high profile special committee that approved some suggestions and made some of its own in the Ranji Trophy for the upcoming season.Since announcing his retirement from international cricket in November 2008 at his favourite Ferozeshah Kotla, Kumble has worn many hats. He is president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and co-vice chairman of the Karnataka State Board for Wildlife, besides being the chairman of the National Cricket Academy till some time ago.He says he has made crucial contributions to all the responsibilities that he has undertaken. And on devoting time to the various tasks, he has a clear cut demarcation. “Priorities are there and, obviously, you need to manage all of that,” he said.”I certainly have contributed to all the various hats that I have worn. It entails certain commitment, certain responsibility and contributions that people expect. And all the hats that I have worn are in honourary capacity. The only commercial interest is my business,” he clarified. Kumble doesn’t travel as much as he used to. But he points out that his commitment to his responsibilities has remained the same.”I think the most important factor is whether you are actually contributing, not necessarily whether you are spending 24×7 on one particular aspect,” he said. “There are certain contributions that I believe personally SHOULD happen. As long as I am satisfied that I am contributing rightly in all these positions I am extremely happy,” said the world’s third highest Test wicket taker (619).advertisementlast_img read more

South Indian cinema is creatively rich, says Sonakshi Sinha

first_imgActress Sonakshi Sinha, who will be seen sharing screen space with superstar Rajinikanth in her debut Tamil film Lingaa, says she decided to make a foray into Southern cinema as it is creatively very rich.”Ever since Dabangg released I was getting lot of offers from down South but I was not able to take it up as I had films keeping me busy here. This time I wanted to make that foray into South Indian films as creatively they are rich and they make such wonderful films… I wanted to experience this whole new world,” Sonakshi told PTI.”I couldn’t have asked for a better debut in Tamil cinema. Here in Bollywood I made my debut with superstar Salman Khan in Dabangg and in South with superstar Rajinikanth. I am very happy,” Sonakshi said.Talking about the South legend and co-star, Sonakshi said, “The popularity of Rajini sir is so much that there were several fans while we were shooting. He is an amazing person and actor. He is a huge superstar but he is very humble man. He talks to everybody nicely.”Sonakshi will be seen sharing screen space with superstar Rajinikanth in her debut Tamil film LingaaAsk her if she also is a big Rajini fan, the 26-year-old actress said, “I have not grown up watching too many films of him. I had seen Hum and I used to watch it over and over again I just loved him a lot in that film.”Sonkashi’s actor-politician father, Shatrughan Sinha and Rajinikanth share a friendly equation.”I did not feel intimidated. When we were on sets, I went upto him and said ‘it is an honour to be working with you but I am nervous’. He said ‘why you should be nervous I should be nervous as you are my friend’s daughter’. That broke the ice and it was nice of him to keep the conversation humorous,” Sonakshi said.”The role is not that he would or I would feel uncomfortable with each other. It is a very well written role. I am glad to be part of the film,” she said.Directed by K S Ravikumar, the film spans generations and goes from current times to the flashback.”Lingaa is based in two eras, one in present and other in 1940s… I wanted to be part of this magical world,” she said without revealing any other details of her role.Since Sonakshi has worked with south directors like Prabhu Deva and A R Murugadoss, she says she is comfortable with the language.”Luckily language was not the barrier for me as I am good with it (languages) and accent. I have worked with lot of south Indian directors I know the basic tone of the language. I had somebody prompting the dialogue from behind so I would repeat that or somebody would hold a card so I would read it out,” she added. The shooting of Lingaa, also starring Anushka Shetty and Jagapathy Babu is currently underway in Mysore. The film will have music by A R Rahman.Sonakshi says she is open to doing more south Indian films.”I am open to working in good films, in good content films. Among the South actors I would like to work with Mahesh Babu, Ravi Teja and Surya,” she added. On the differences between the two film industries – South and Bollywood, the actress says, “I think work happens much quicker there (South) in terms of speed. The film unit there is much concise… Here there are too many people on the sets.”In Bollywood, Sonakshi will be seen next opposite Akshay Kumar in Holiday. Then she has Prabhu Deva’s next Action Jackson and Tevar with Arjun Kapoor.last_img read more

Sports acupuncture scores major points among fitness enthusiasts

first_imgAcupuncture has suddenly caught the attention of fitness freaks and sportspersons, who have greatly benefitted from this therapy.Dr. Raman Kapur, a renowned medical acupuncture specialist, practicing in New Delhi since the last 32 years shares his experiences of treating some well known sportsmen with acupuncture:Acupuncture is one of the quickest ways to restore muscle balanceIndian players:Cricketer Yuvraj Singh came to him in March 2013, with a history of migraine headaches which he has had since 2007.  Yuvraj used to take frequent medications to get relief. The headaches were accompanied by blurring of vision and pain around his eye ball. His trigger would often be empty stomach, causing wind and then headaches.  Yuvraj who had a disturbed sleep pattern also suffered from nasal allergies accompanied with urticaria.  Another problem which had taken a toll on his career was his severe left sided neck stiffness. He also had recurrent episodes of low back pain radiating to his legs, causing him to often miss matches.Yuvraj who had a disturbed sleep pattern also suffered from nasal allergies accompanied with urticariaAll these problems were treated concurrently by Dr. Raman Kapur with acupuncture wherein he used a combination of body acupuncture points and ear acupuncture points to great effect. Today, Yuvraj has recovered and is super fit.  Yuvraj said, “The best part of this therapy is that it is safe and drugless without any side effects and I have made a significant recovery. I feel the therapy should be made popular so that more sportspersons and cricketers can get benefits.”advertisementAnother famous polo player, Mr. Navin Khanna, took acupuncture treatment for his recurrent tennis elbow and got fully cured by Dr. Raman Kapur.  International players:According to Matt Callison, a faculty member at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and licensed acupuncturist in San Diego, California, traditional Chinese medicine has been an extremely helpful and growing trend in athletics for quite a while.San Francisco 49ers team members, Steve Young and Jerry Rice have been treated with sports acupuncture, and Canadian speed skater Kevin Overland received sports acupuncture to help him earn a bronze medal in the 1998 Olympics. As a sports acupuncturist, Callison has been treating athletes for 11 years. Three of those years were spent with the Minnesota Vikings during their playoff run, and he now treats many of the San Diego Chargers. There are no side effects of acupuncture treatments when provided by a fully trained and licensed acupuncturistPacific College use acupuncture to help rehabilitate post-operative injuries, sports injuries and athletic performance by increasing range of motion, muscle strength and tissue healing potential.Callison reported that the most common injuries he treats athletes for are muscle contusions and tendinitis, as well as over-use injuries involving the lower back, shoulder, knee and ankle, all examples of common sports injury areas. These injuries typically require two sports acupuncture treatments a week, with a varied recovery time depending on the injury.Marcellus Wiley, a defensive end for the San Diego Chargers, is one patient who noticed how quickly he felt the benefit of acupuncture.”I responded quickly and favorably to the treatment. It was refreshing to receive therapy that allowed me to sustain my health for the duration of a season and physically grueling career, “said Wiley. How does it work?According to Dr. Kapur, both Oriental medicine and sports medicine techniques focus on proprioception, which he defines as the muscles’ awareness communicating to the central nervous system. Injury can disrupt this communication, thus hindering balance.”Acupuncture is one of the quickest ways to restore muscle balance,” Dr. Kapur said. “When acupuncture is used at specific sites, the muscle spindles are reset, and then that balance is reawakened.”Kapur further adds, “When you insert a sports acupuncture needle to a motor point region, it changes the awareness that the muscle reports to the central nervous system, and that is completely different”.Sports acupuncture consists of the gentle insertion and stimulation of thin, disposable sterile needles at strategic points near the surface of the body. Over 2,000 sports acupuncture points on the human body connect with 14 major pathways, called meridians. Chinese medicine practitioners believe that these meridians conduct qi, or energy, between the surface of the body and internal organs. It is qi that regulates spiritual, emotional, mental and physical balance. Disruption of the flow of qi through poor health habits or other circumstances can result in pain and disease. Sports acupuncture helps to keep the normal flow of this energy unblocked and “fine-tune the bio-electric system. “This ability to fine-tune and restore the body’s balance makes sports acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine a viable preventative therapy that greatly enhances sports medicine exercises. Many players come to see me for injury prevention by way of balancing their opposing muscle groups, especially to work on common sports injury points,” says Dr Kapur.advertisementSide-effectsDr. Kapur maintains that there are no side effects of acupuncture treatments when provided by a fully trained and licensed acupuncturist. In 1993, the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference on acupuncture released a similar affirmation: “The data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies. One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse side effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other medical procedures used for the same conditions. Athletes especially need to be balanced and take care of their bodies. That is what acupuncture does. Every athlete can benefit from it in that respect.”Dr Raman Kapur is the Chairman, Dept. of Medical Acupuncture at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.last_img read more

Borussia Dortmund stun Bayern Munich to clinch German Super Cup

first_imgBorussia Dortmund players pose with the German Super Cup trophyBorussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the German Super Cup on Wednesday to win the first domestic title of the season.Dortmund shut down former teammate Robert Lewandowski, while on the other side Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the 23rd minute and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the victory in the 62nd.”We defended sensationally and allowed very little,” Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp said. “We stayed with it for 90 minutes, but we are still a long way from being where we want to be.”Both teams played without many of their World Cup stars, who have only recently returned to duty.Dortmund also beat Bayern 4-2 in last season’s Super Cup, but Bayern went on to sweep the domestic double ahead of Dortmund. The Bundesliga season kicks off on Aug. 22.Lewandowski, the Bundesliga’s top scorer last season with Dortmund, stayed scoreless in his official debut for Bayern. He had one shot on goal that was well saved by Mitch Langerak. Lewandowski moved to Bayern on a free transfer in the offseason and was greeted with boos from the mostly partisan crowd of 80,667 at Dortmund’s stadium.”It was our first game and our attack was not good. Dortmund played better,” Lewandowski said.Bayern’s defensive midfielder Javi Martinez, who played as one of three defenders, left the match on a stretcher after 31 minutes with a left-knee injury.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wears the spiderman mask after scoring against BayernBayern coach Pep Guardiola later said he feared that Martinez would be out “for a long time,” while German media speculated that he had torn ligaments.advertisement”We still need time. But the bad news is the injury to Javi Martinez. We will know more on Thursday, but I think he will be out for a long time,” Guardiola said.Winger Franck Ribery also sat out the match with a reported knee injury, after announcing earlier that he was quitting the France national team. Netherlands winger Arjen Robben also missed the match for Bayern.Dortmund went ahead after a one-two between Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang and some clumsy defending by David Alaba. Mkhitaryan drove into the roof of the net from inside the penalty box.Aubameyang headed in the winner from a cross by Lukasz Piszczek – then put on a Spiderman face mask before being substituted.Manuel Neuer, one of Germany’s three World Cup winners to start for Bayern, turned away shots from Sebastian Kehl and Jonas Hofmann late in the first half to prevent his team from falling behind by an even bigger margin.Neuer also had to race back to clear from the line when a back pass from Martinez nearly took him by surprise earlier in the match.Lewandowski had his only chance at the start of the second half but Langerak, usually a backup for Roman Weidenfeller, stood his ground and saved with his chest.Langerak also turned away a free kick by Alaba, the only other time Bayern came close to scoring despite bringing on Mario Goetze, who scored the only goal in Germany’s 1-0 win over Argentina in the World Cup final in Brazil. Neuer had to race far out of his area to foil a last-gasp Dortmund attempt.last_img read more

Power and water supply cut off to Ajit Singh’s bungalow

first_imgAfter his defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections, former Union minister Ajit Singh was further embarrassed on Saturday when the authorities snapped power and water supplies to his Tughlaq Road bungalow here. Despite his defeat in the elections, Singh has been refusing to vacate the accommodation allotted by the government. The bungalow has now been allotted to Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who is living at a private guest house because of Singh’s refusal.Singh, the 75-year-old Rashtriya Lok Dal president, lost the Lok Sabha elections from Baghpat which he had been representing since 1999.Sources said when the police arrived at the bungalow, RLD activists were holding a meeting of sugarcane farmers. Singh is reportedly abroad.Singh is one of the four former UPA ministers who have not vacated their bungalows despite repeated eviction notices. The RLD leader was served the eviction notice in July. Senior police officers said they had earlier sent a team to the bungalow on the direction of the Lok Sabha secretariat to ask the former Union minister to vacate it. But police faced stiff resistance from Singh’s supporters earlier this month. “The quasijudicial authority responsible for evicting overstaying politicians in government bungalows has been sending teams to different properties for the past two months. We were waiting for Singh to be back, so that the team with police personnel could go there again to get the house vacated,” said a government source.last_img read more
