Young boyz clip Cuba

first_imgKaheem Parris’ 80th- minute strike gave Jamaica’s under-17s a 1-0 win over Cuba in the second game of their two-match friendly series at the Jamaica Football Federation Technical Centre yesterday. The young Reggae Boyz were again the better of the two teams and created better chances in what was a deserved win.Jamaica’s coach, Andrew Edwards, was pleased with what he saw, but insisted that there is still a lot of work to be done.”I am very pleased with what we got, but we still have areas we have to work on. Despite not creating as many chances as we did Sunday, but it’s a work in progress and we will continue to strive for better,” Edwards said. Both teams started slowly and took a while to get into stride, with not much openings created in the first half. The first real chance went to Cuba’s Jan Maro Rodriquez, whose shot just missed the upright. Trayvvone Reid had a great chance moments later but steered his effort wide of the mark. After the break, the young boyz were more purposeful and had good chances through Blake White (twice) and Parris. But the best chance fell to Sunday’s hero Ricardo McIntosh, who turned Nique Daley’s low cross wide from six yards. But Parris, the creative force in midfield, ensured the boyz got the morale boosting victory when he slotted past the Cuban custodian from outside the area, with the aid of an unpredictable bounce.MASSIVE IMPROVEMENTS”We put in a way better performance that we did against USA and Canada, and physically, we were much better, so those are areas we showed massive improvements and will continue to improve and get stronger. But winning was important. It will give us confidence … although everybody believe we are in a zone of death, we believe we are in a zone of opportunity and we are going to go to Panama and fight tooth and nail for every second and hopefully the results will fall our way,” Edwards added.Cuba’s coach, Rufina Sotolongo, was not too disappointed with the defeat and said all objectives were met.”We came here to see some of the players and we saw the players and their ability to manage the game over the two games. I am not dissatisfied, we really did what we came to do,” he said.last_img read more

High prevalence of adult conduct disorder

first_imgDear Editor,As a scientist, my observations have afforded me to conclude that there is a high prevalence of adult conduct disorder (sociopaths and psychopaths) in our population. Conduct disorder is a childhood problem which decreases by adolescence. However, Guyana is an abnormal place and the incidence of this disorder among the adult population is staggering. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for mental disorders (DSM-5), categorises this mental illness as antisocial personality disorder. So, what behavioural markers or symptoms characterise antisocial personality disorder? Well, individuals with this disorder deviate from the norms of society and they often act without a conscience. They are also deprived of empathy and shame. It is very difficult to live among such people. They humiliate decent human beings. Their minds are moulded by poor values. They often hold criminal records, kill, steal, set fires, break rules, disrespect others, show disregard for anything that is right and use charm to manipulate and exploit others.Sociopaths and psychopaths have caused life to be unbearable in Guyana. For example, Guyanese saw how they riot and burn in Agricola. Guyanese saw how they disobey the laws like members of the APNU/PNC/AFC Government. Guyanese have also witnessed how they fudge documents in professional settings like the GECOM Secretariat. They even invade homes and murder innocent citizens on a daily basis. These people have no conscience. They need help. So, what factors are responsible for producing such abnormal people? Are biological factors such as genes, neurochemical imbalances and brain deficits responsible? Or environmental factors such as poor parenting, poor values and poorly developed superegos are responsible? Or is a combination of the two responsible? Science has carved a role for both biology and environment in producing anti-social personality disorder. So, what can be done to help these people? Well, a combination of behavioural therapy and drug therapy can be effective treatment. However, Guyana lacks these resources, largely because the APNU/PNC/AFC Government is severely affected by this disorder. And this has caused Government to immorally ride taxpayers to retain power illegally.Editor, antisocial personality disorder is a huge problem for Guyana, as such, immediate attention needs to be given to this disorder or else it will spiral further out of control.Sincerely,Annie Baliram, PhDlast_img read more

“Dehumanizing Women Is Not Part of Liberian Culture”

first_imgVice President Joseph N. Boakai has pledged to help end violence against women and children and ensure that they enjoy equal rights in the Liberian society.Speaking on Wednesday during a program held by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated near Fish Market in Monrovia, he called on Liberian men to recognize women as major contributors in society, declaring that “dehumanizing women is not part of Liberian culture.”“We the men in Liberia want to sincerely apologize for the misconduct against women, and I am calling on men to realize that women comprise 50% of our society, and are also our partners,” the Vice President said.Liberian men must make the commitment to protect their female counterparts by doing away with gender based violence, he admonished. The president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, T. Nelson Williams, said the purpose of the gathering and the walk was to inform the world and Liberians that gender based violence and rape is not necessary in Liberia.“We the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, UN Women and Ministry of Gender have planned to speak out against this hideous crime that is committed against young girls and women in this country,” Mr. Williams said.He said, last week, the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha and Servants of All Prayers Assembly worked together in various ways to engage and inform men about the need to end violence against women.“We also visited the prison compound in Bomi and the Monrovia Central Prison because they need to be counseled before coming out. We realized that when men commit these crimes and go to prison, if they are not rehabilitated, they come out and continue to commit these crimes. For the brothers, this is 365 Days of Activism, not just the 16 Days of Activism,” he added.National program manager of UN Women, Ghoma Karloweah, called on the legislature to speedily pass the Domestic Violence Bill into law. “We need to mobilize more people, including lawmakers, to work to pass the Domestic Violence Bill into law to be able to protect our sisters, daughters and mothers,” she said. Camp siege in Lebanon ends

first_imgNearby villages celebrated with fireworks, drumming and dancing after the government declared victory. The al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam fighters made their last stand by trying to stage a dawn breakout from the Nahr el-Bared camp, triggering the final gunbattles. The militants sneaked out through a tunnel to an area of the camp under army control and fought with troops. At the same time, another group of militants struck elsewhere to try to escape. They were aided by outside fighters arriving in cars, said security officials and state-run television. Troop reinforcements deployed close to the camp on Lebanon’s northern Mediterranean coastline. They blocked roads to prevent fighters from sneaking out, residents said. Helicopters provided aerial reconnaissance, and checkpoints were erected as far as Beirut and southern Lebanon. Troops hunted the militants down in buildings, fields and roads around the camp, residents said, and the army launched dragnets to capture any still at large. GUNBATTLE: Remaining militants in Palestinian facility try to escape; 39 are killed. By Hussein Dakroub THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MOHAMMARA, Lebanon – Lebanon’s army crushed the last remnants of a militant group in a ferocious gunbattle Sunday that killed 39 of the fighters, ending a bloody three-month siege at a Palestinian refugee camp that was the country’s worst internal violence in years. Residents of nearby villages, armed with guns and sticks, fanned out to protect their houses and prevent the fighters from seeking refuge and melting into the local population, state TV reported. Mohammed Khodor Najib, 65, boasted about how he captured a militant in Mohammara, a farming community near the camp. “I found one of them hiding in my garden,” he said. Using a hunting rifle, he opened fire. “I hit him and handed him over to the army.” Officials said the army killed 39 militants and captured at least 15 others. It was not immediately known how many militants managed to escape. By late afternoon, only the occasional gunfire and could be heard from Nahr el-Bared. The army said three soldiers were killed in Sunday’s fighting and two on Saturday, raising to 158 the number of troops who have died in the conflict – Lebanon’s worst internal fighting since the 1975-90 civil war. More than 20 civilians and more than 60 militants have also been killed. Fatah Islam set up its headquarters at the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp last fall. Some Lebanese officials say the group is a branch of al-Qaida that wants to make Lebanon and the Palestinian refugee camps there a safe haven. The State Department has called the group an offshoot of a Syrian-backed militia, Fatah al-Intifada. The siege at Nahr el-Bared began May 20 when police raided militants’ hideouts in the nearby city of Tripoli. Fighters burst out of the nearby refugee camp, ambushing army troops called in to help. The army then laid siege to the camp with tanks and artillery. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
