World Cup 1999: Australia become two-time World Champions, Klusener’s heroics go in vain

first_imgThe World Cup returned to the United Kingdom after 16 years for its seventh edition in 1999. Most matches took place in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, while there was also one clash between South Africa and Kenya that was held at Amstelveen in the Netherlands. The 12 participating nations were divided into two groups of six with the top three sides from each bracket progressing to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) new Super Six phase. The six countries that would make it to the Super Sixes had to face all the nations that had qualified from the opposing group once. Once all the teams finished playing against each other, the top four countries would then advance to the semi-final stage.Often considered the most entertaining World Cup of all time, the seventh edition of the cup began with a solid win for England over Sri Lanka, while Scotland and Bangladesh’s debuts in the tournament ended in defeat. India succumbed to a shock defeat against Zimbabwe, making it two losses in a row to start the tournament and the New Zealander’s asserted some Trans-Tasman supremacy by beating Australia. However, it was South Africa who were looking like frontrunners at the start with eventual Man of the Series Lance Klusener in imperious form. Regardless of whether it was with ball or bat, there’s simply no doubting the fact that 1999 was Klusener’s World Cup from an individual point of view.To say that Klusener, affectionately known as Zulu, was in the form of his life would be an understatement and the fact that he won four of the six available Man of the Match awards in the group stage just accentuates that. Despite a shock defeat against Zimbabwe in their last group match, the Proteas were one of the first names into the Super Sixes. They were joined by India and Zimbabwe from their group for the Super Six phase. Zimbabwe, as alluded to, were enjoying themselves and had also got the better of Kenya and hosts England to go with victories against India and South Africa for a spot in the Super Sixes.advertisementIndia, meanwhile, recovered after a poor start to the competition and picked up crucial wins with the inspirational presence of Sachin Tendulkar, who returned from his father’s funeral to score an unbeaten 140 against Kenya. The Men in Blue followed up the win against Kenya with two more victories against Sri Lanka and England to qualify for the Super Sixes. However, that was as good as it got for India and Zimbabwe since New Zealand, Pakistan and Australia from Group B along with Group A toppers South Africa proved to be too strong in the Super Sixes and progressed to the semis. The first semi-final between Pakistan and New Zealand saw the 1992 winners chase down a target of 242 comfortably with 9 wickets and 15 balls remaining. The second semi-final though was a real humdinger of a contest, if there ever was one and is considered the greatest ODI of all time by many observers of the game. Australia had earlier beaten South Africa in a close contest in the Super Sixes to top that table. Topping the Super Six table turned out to be the difference in the semi-final after an ebb-and-flow encounter ended in the match being tied. After batting first, Australia restricted South Africa to 213 courtesy of Shane Warne’s 4 for 29 and last man Allan Donald’s run-out in the fourth delivery of the final over, which resulted in heartbreak for the Proteas as Klusener fumed while walking back to the pavilion on 31 not out. Australia progressed to the final despite the tie having finished above South Africa in the Super Six table. They faced Pakistan in the final in a rather lopsided match, which they won by 8 wickets and 179 balls to spare. Even though the final wasn’t as gripping as the rest of the tournament, it marked the start of the Australian era of dominance in cricket. Also Read | World Cup 1992: Imran Khan inspires Pakistan to World Cup gloryRead Also | World Cup 1987: Underdogs Australia lift the World Cup in the subcontinentAlso Read | World Cup 1983: India pull off a huge upset to end West Indies’ dominanceAlso Read | World Cup 1979: West Indies continue their dominance with consecutive World Cup triumphsAlso Seelast_img read more

Laura Muir sets sights on double-double at European Indoor Championships

first_imgWith Muir primed for success, the British team are hopeful of exceeding the 10 medals they won at this event in Belgrade in 2017, and they should get a second gold on the opening night with Katarina Johnson-Thompson an overwhelming favourite in the women’s pentathlon. Reuse this content Share on Facebook “Five years ago I struggled with pressure quite a lot,” admitted Muir, who finished 11th in the 1500m before pulling out of the 800m. “I just got really nervous and found that I didn’t race very well. Now I have psychologically flipped things and it has worked really well. I had a lot of pressure for Berlin last year for the outdoors but I dealt with that fine and came away with the win. So coming into Glasgow I feel more relaxed and more excited than anything.”Not that it will be easy given that the German Konstanze Klosterhalfen, who has kicked on impressively since joining Alberto Salazar’s Nike Oregon Project group, is lurking in the 3,000m. To add to Muir’s challenge, she also has to race in the heats of the 1500m two and a half hours’ before the 3,000m.However, the Scot is confident of rising to the challenge. “We would only do it if I was fit enough to do it,” she said. “I don’t want to go out there and do a mediocre performance. I want to go out there and smash it.”Her coach, Andy Young, meanwhile, bills the 3,000m final as the race of the championships. “It’s an absolutely epic race, like Mary Decker-Slaney v Zola Budd in the 80s,” he says, with a smile. “Let’s just hope it ends better than it did for those two in 1984.”Muir proved her form a fortnight ago by smashing the British indoor mile record by more than five seconds, but there were suggestions afterwards that her racing spikes may have been a prototype and thus illegal. Young, however, dismissed it as “a bit of a “non-story. The last time I checked there was no complaint.“We brought them in for training rather than racing, but she liked them,” he added, pointing out that other athletes had worn the same-type spikes last summer. “I think she could have run near enough in high heels in Birmingham and it wouldn’t have made any difference.” Read more The last time Laura Muir raced at a major championships in Glasgow, the hype and hope weighed her down like an anvil. Now, five years on from flopping at the Commonwealth Games, Muir is relishing the chance to make history at the European Indoor Championships. If all goes to plan the 25-year-old will claim 3,000m gold on Friday night and then rapidly follow it up with a 1500m title on Sunday – an achievement that would not only repeat her success in Belgrade two years ago but also make her the first person, male or female, to ever achieve a “double-double” at these championships. However Johnson-Thompson, who believes she is in the best condition of her career, lamented the opportunity to put one over her great Belgium rival. “I’m sad she’s not here,” she said. “I love competing against her. I love the battle of it. I think she brings out the best in me.”Elsewhere Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the brilliant teenage Norwegian, is favourite to win gold in the men’s 1500m and 3000m, while the German pole vaulter Katha Bauer will become the first athlete to compete in a major championships with a defibrillator, which she had fitted last year, although she is unlikely to win a medal. However, the British team captain, Guy Learmonth, who is competing with a broken finger and badly bruised ribs sustained at the Birmingham grand prix two weeks ago, believes he can overcome his own medical problems in the men’s 800m. “If I break my hand in the process of winning, I won’t care,” he said. … we have a small favour to ask. My goal is to win Wimbledon Cori Gauff after Venus shock

first_imgLondon: Cori Gauff, at 15 the youngest ever qualifier for Wimbledon, is not content with just beating five-time champion Venus Williams — now she wants to win the title. The teenage American, who was not even born when Williams won her first two Wimbledon singles titles, showed not an ounce of fear on Court One, making light of the 24 years age difference and her ranking of 313 as she eased to a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Gauff made no bones about her ambitions at the tournament. But you never know what happens.” Gauff said she was determined to make the most of her opportunities. “I mean, like my motto is just like wing it,” she said. “I’ve said that before. This is kind of a sad thing, we’re all going to die one day, I just want to make the most of it.” Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian OpenGauff, who revealed Rihanna and Beyonce were her role models off the court, said she had not allowed her admiration of childhood idol Williams affect her play. However, she did have a slight wobble at the end when she let slip three match points. Williams, whose exploits along with her younger sister Serena inspired Gauff to take up the sport, made no secret of how far Gauff could go. “I think the sky’s the limit, it really is,” said Williams. “Just have fun. Enjoy life. That’s all you can do.” Gauff, who said Roger Federer had been a big help too re-energising her and could claim some credit for her winning the French Open junior title last year, said she had finally been able to muster the courage to address one of the Williams sisters after twice failing to prior to that. “I was just telling her thank you for everything she’s done,” said Gauff. “She and her sister have been, like, heroes for me and many other little girls out there. I was just thanking her.” Gauff sank into her chair and cried in the immediate aftermath of the victory. Later she recalled the previous time she had been reduced to tears. “The movie ‘Endgame’ when Ironman died, I was crying,” she said. “Every time I think of it, I get teary-eyed because I really liked Ironman.” Gauff, though, said there is another side of her when she is off the court. “I’m definitely really goofy off the court,” she said. “I’m always cracking jokes. I was practicing, people were taking pictures of me. “Actually quite a few people. I was actually, like, smiling. “The pros who have been here for a long time, they’re serious. “But I can’t just help laugh because it’s weird for people to take pictures of me and not smile.”last_img read more

Family of Toronto shooter says he suffered from severe mental illness

first_imgTORONTO – A 29-year-old man who went on a deadly shooting spree in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant Greektown, killing an aspiring nurse and a 10-year-old girl, had a life-long struggle with severe mental illness, his family said Monday.Faisal Hussain’s parents said they were devastated by their son’s “senseless violence” and the loss of life that resulted from it. Hussain was found dead, with a gunshot wound, after exchanging fire with officers during the incident on Danforth Avenue on Sunday night.“Our son had severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life,” the family said in a statement issued moments after their son was identified as the shooter by Ontario’s police watchdog.“The interventions of professionals were unsuccessful. Medications and therapy were unable to treat him,” they said. “While we did our best to seek help for him throughout his life of struggle and pain, we could never imagine that this would be his devastating and destructive end.”Police have revealed next to no information about Hussain or his motives, but said they are investigating the case from all angles.Police identified an 18-year-old Toronto woman who died in the shooting as Reese Fallon.Facebook posts from a man who appeared to be Fallon’s father indicated she had just graduated from high school and was about to begin studying nursing at Hamilton’s McMaster University in September. The university issued a statement confirming a new enrolled student died in the attack and extending condolences on her death. One friend described Fallon as a “very happy” person.“Reese gave the warmest of hugs. She was always so kind, ” said Frank Hong. “Everyone … wanted to be around her.”One of Fallon’s friends was also injured in Sunday’s attack, Hong said. The family of the 10-year-old victim did not want her name released at this time, police said in a statement Monday evening.Investigators said six women and seven men ranging in age from 17 to 59 suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious in the shooting. The attack took place along a street packed with independent businesses and surrounded by family homes and parks. On Monday, the area was largely deserted as police combed through the neighbourhood. Some residents returned to the street later Monday to leave candles, flowers and messages of support at various places while a prayer service was held at a church to mourn the victims.Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath and Toronto Mayor John Tory joined members of the Greek Town neighbourhood at the service just steps from where the shooting took place.“It was a church hall filled with love and many prayers were said for everybody,” said Tory, who later walked along Danforth to speak with pedestrians and people sitting on patios after leaving the church.“I felt that it was important to come out and not give in to fear,” said Laila Hawrylyshyn, who attended both the prayer service and the walk down Danforth. “I was out earlier today and it was very eerie and I just decided that this is about community more than anything.”“It’s like a small village for us,” said Valia Dsaliou, who works at a Greek-language radio station in the area. “This is something that we couldn’t even imagine would happen, but it happened. But we don’t know why or what all this is supposed to mean to us.”Those answers did not immediately come from Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders, who declined to comment on what prompted the attack.“We do not know why this happened yet,” he said. “The investigation itself is very fluid, it is very new, it’s going to take some time.”Police said they were searching an east-end Toronto apartment as part of the investigation. The shooting began around 10 p.m. on Sunday and only ended after two police officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter on a sidestreet near the site of the carnage, authorities said.Laurie Gutmann was with family at a restaurant waiting for his partner’s birthday cake to be served when the shots rang out.“It was very quick — boom boom boom boom — and then we realized it was gunshots. There was a pause, and then there were more gunshots,” he said.Gutmann said he heard screaming from the restaurant’s patio and saw a woman who had been shot in the thigh and was bleeding on the ground. Servers and fellow patrons provided first aid and held her hand until paramedics arrived, he said.Lenny Graf, who was dining at another restaurant, was watching his nine-year-old son and a friend play around a nearby fountain when gunfire erupted.“My first instinct was to try and find Jason and I saw him crouched behind the fountain and I noticed that the gunman had finished shooting there and was walking away,” he said. “I grabbed Jason and I took him into the alleyway. We ran to the back of restaurant to see that Jason’s friend was in there safe and so was my wife.”Nick Balkos said he saw the shooter about 15 minutes after he had closed his restaurant.“He was running across the street yelling something and then he fired six to 10 shots into the Second Cup,” said Balkos. “He was shooting while he was running.”Andreas Silaidis said he heard about six gunshots, looked out his window and saw people running and a few bodies on the ground.“There were cops everywhere,” he said.Other witnesses posted photos and videos online, including a clip that appears to show a man, clad in black and carrying a satchel, walk a few steps before lifting his arms in front of him as gunshots ring out. That video was posted late Sunday by Instagram user @arilanise, who appears to have since deleted her account.Tina Papachristos, who has called the neighbourhood home since childhood, said she’s struggling to process what happened. Her children visit the area nearly every night, she said, adding she’s grieving for the families of those killed.“I can imagine the devastation of any mother … that had to lose a loved one,” she said. “I was up until about five in the morning just devastated.”Tory called the shooting an “unspeakable” act and said the time had come to confront the rising prevalence of guns in the city, which has experienced a spike in shootings in recent weeks.“Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” he said. “I know answering questions like this won’t fully eliminate tragedies like this, but even if we can prevent one of these incidents, then in my view it is a discussion worth having and having very soon.”At Ontario’s legislature, politicians held a moment of silence and paid tribute to the shooting victims.Premier Doug Ford called Sunday night’s incident the most “brazen” in the city to date.“As a lifelong Toronto resident I have always been proud to speak up for and to defend this city,” he said. “Unlike so many other places, we’ve always been confident that this is a safe city. Today for too many, this confidence is shaken.”The Greektown shooting spree comes nearly three months to the day after 10 people died in a van attack in a north Toronto neighbourhood.Alek Minassian, 25, of Richmond Hill, Ont., faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder in connection with the April 23 incident.— with files from Alanna Rizza, Olivia Bowden, Alison Auld and Kelly Geraldine Malone.last_img read more

Queen Latifah Names New Carnival Horizon And Showcases Young Artists of St

first_imgCarnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Horizon, was officially named by godmother Queen Latifah in a ceremony in New York last week that showcased the talented young artists from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital whose artwork adorns the Dreamscape, a stunning three-deck-high LED sculpture in the ship’s atrium.Following the ceremony, Latifah squared off against Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion Jake Elliott in Lip Sync Battle: Horizon modeled after the hit Paramount Network TV series and rolling out across the Carnival fleet.Latifah rocked the house with her incredible interpretation of the Weather Girls classic “It’s Raining Men,” while Elliott had a chance to live out his rock star fantasies performing Whitesnake’s arena anthem “Here I Go Again,” all performed with back-up dancers from Carnival Horizon’s Playlist Productions to a packed house in the Liquid Lounge. But the big winner was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which received a $100,000 donation from Carnival representing monies raised from various fundraisers, both onboard and ashore. The funds continue the line’s ongoing support of St. Jude with more than $16 million raised in the fight against childhood cancer since the partnership began in 2010.“Carnival Horizon’s naming ceremony was one of our best yet, with Queen Latifah carrying out her duties as godmother then battling it out with Super Bowl champion Jake Elliott of my hometown Philadelphia Eagles in an entertaining Lip Sync Battle,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We were also delighted to showcase the wonderfully talented children from St. Jude whose artwork on the Dreamscape will be forever associated with this spectacular ship,” she added.Added Latifah, “My time aboard Carnival Horizon was nothing short of incredible. In addition to having the honor of serving as the ship’s godmother, meeting the amazing kids from St. Jude and their families and squaring off against Jake in an all-out Lip Sync Battle is certainly something I will always cherish.”“This is an absolute thrill for our patients and their families to have their artwork featured as a permanent display on this magnificent ship,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “The ongoing support of Carnival team members and their customers around the globe for our lifesaving mission plays a critical role in advancing research and treatment for pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases.”As the newest ship in the fleet, Carnival Horizon introduces several innovations, including the first-ever Dr. Seuss water park, a new teppanyaki venue, and Smokehouse Brewhouse, a unique dining concept that combines real deal BBQ favorites created by Food Network star and longtime partner Guy Fieri, along with four craft beers brewed on board by brewmaster Colin Presby. The second in the line’s Vista-class series, Carnival Horizon also includes features like SkyRide, an IMAX Theatre, a Havana section with its own Cuban-themed bar and pool, and Family Harbor with extra-roomy staterooms and the Family Harbor Lounge.Carnival Horizon kicks off a summer schedule from New York with a four-day cruise to Bermuda departing later today. RBC predicts big bounceback for the Canadian economy in 2014

OTTAWA — Royal Bank says the Canadian economy is primed for a big bounce-back year in 2014.One of Canada’s biggest banks says in a new forecast that the economy is due for a 2.6% expansion next year, following two sub-par years of 1.7% growth.RBC’s call is significantly above the consensus among economists and the Bank of Canada, who also see the economy moving toward above-potential growth next year but at a more modest 2.3 or 2.4% clip. Two other forecasting houses also came out Thursday with consensus-like projections.IHS Global Insight expects Canada’s gross domestic product to advance by 2.4% in 2014, while the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is pencilling in a 2.3% gain. All three cite similar reasons for the improvement — renewed strength in the United States resulting in increased demand for Canadian exports, which the past two years have been the weak link in the Canadian economy.RBC is also relatively optimistic about the strength of the Canadian domestic economy. The bank’s analysts don’t believe, as some others do, that the Canadian housing market will suffer a setback in 2014, reasoning that rising incomes and improving household finances will support housing and consumer spending. read more

On International Day UN promotes cooperative solutions for social inclusion

“Let us draw on the strengths of cooperatives as we pool efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda and make sure that no one is left behind,” the Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Guy Ryder said, referencing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which includes the SDGs. Decent work is a fundamental mechanism for inclusion and social justice, Mr. Ryder said, noting that decent work is embedded in the SDGs. “It means being particularly attentive to the situation of working women and men who are at risk of exclusion and poverty, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, migrants and refugees,” he said, highlighting this year’s theme for the Day, which is to ensure that no one is left behind.Cooperatives allow people to create their own economic opportunities through the power of the collective, the UN has said, but there are still more areas where cooperatives’ potential can be explored.Mr. Ryder noted that cooperatives could play a powerful role in efforts to eliminate child labour, forced labour and discrimination at work. “Addressing the multi-dimensional challenges of inclusion will require cooperation and partnership,” he said. The top 300 cooperatives alone generate $2.5 trillion in annual turnover, more than the GDP of France, according to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).The Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) – whose membership includes ILO, UNDESA and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) – is scheduled to host the observance of the 2017 International Day of Cooperatives during the High-level Political Forum, to be held from 10-19 July in New York. This year’s theme for the Forum is “eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world.” read more

Tax collection down by 3B arrears keeping Govt afloat Jordan

Despite the new tax measures that Budget 2017 brought, Finance Minister Winston Jordan recently revealed that it is the collection of arrears that is keeping the Government afloat. He was at the time addressing a gathering of Guyana’s most influential business leaders at the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) mid-year dinner.Finance Minister Winston JordanAccording to Minister Jordan, a shortfall in Value Added Tax (VAT) and income tax collection by some $3 billion has weakened the revenue base.In its place, however, Jordan reported that Government’s collection of arrears amounted to some $4.3 billion. This, the Minister reported, is what is keeping the Government afloat.“We are not raking in any money here,” Jordan said.“Contrary to the belief that we are raking in money, up to May (last), VAT collection was $1.8 billion down relative to 2016 and income tax was down by $1.2 billion relative to last year.”“What we are raking in at the moment is arrears. Arrears have been up by $4.3 billion. That is what has saved us so far. It’s the collections of arrears for some previously non-compliant sectors,” Jordan added.During a press conference last month, Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Godfrey Statia, had revealed that VAT revenues were down by 10 per cent. However, Statia had attributed this to slashing the VAT rate from 16 per cent. Government in its 2017 Budget slashed VAT by two per cent, bringing it down to 14 per cent.According to Statia, the Authority had expected that the revenue collection would go down based on the rate deduction by some 12.5 per cent.Nevertheless, he had posited that changing certain goods to standard rating and moving away from zero-rated to exempt taxes would lead to a more level playing field. In the meantime, the GRA Commissioner General had said the tax collection body is working assiduously to ensure that businesses and individuals are tax compliant in the relevant areas. Only recently, it was revealed that work of a special enforcement team has resulted in scores of city businesses being made to register for the payment of VAT.In explaining the decline in the revenues, Chairman of the GRA Board of Directors, Rawle Lucas, had pointed to the fact that the tax base for the VAT is expenditure, that is, money that people spend, the level of spending in the economy with respect to VAT and the level of input and the value of imports with respect to VAT as well. Firebug is a Masterful and Commanding Story That Will Stay With You

first_imgStay on target Buy This Comic: MAN-EATERS #1Buy This Comic: Twisted Romance “A volcano goddess named Keegan is loose in the world, and the prophecies are unclear whether her coming will bring humanity’s destruction or salvation. In the shadow of a sacred volcano, from which Keegan derives her powers, lies the ancient city of Azar. Holding the key to the mysteries of her past, Keegan and her friends must get to Azar before it is overrun by a horde of forest monsters. Meanwhile, The nefarious Cult of the Goddess has plans to summon forces as old as time to extinguish Keegan’s flame permanently.”FIREBUG  (C, W, A): Johnnie Christmas (C): Tamra Bonvillain (L): Ariana MaherComics can deep dive into some aspects of family, loss, and love. However, if a writer can balance this with elements of folklore and mythology, they always have my heart. They can create something entirely out of this world that allows readers to fully immerse themselves in the world until the very last panel. Firebug formulates a perfect combination of folklore layered with a tale of family and finding the fire in you. (See what I did there? WINK.)via Image ComicsJohnnie Christmas is a masterful and commanding storyteller. You can tell just how much passion, love, and patience went into this project and the results are outstanding. Christmas creates a mesmerizing and touching story. This comic is enriched with lore that can be from any culture but explicitly his to translate and expand upon. Firebug feels like a personal piece in the making, something that needed to be told. Christmas writes of love, grief, heartbreak, discovery, self-acceptance, and most importantly family. Within a story that carries a sweeping narrative of lore, this doesn’t distract from the story but enhances it into an extraordinary adventure.Christmas develops illuminating characters that will stick with you. Keegan, our lead and Fire Goddess will have you wanting to follow her adventures even after the tale has ended. She goes through a lot within this graphic novel. We travel with her throughout the journey of different phases. She’s a radical, a goddess, fighting her beliefs and what prophecies may tell. After all of this, she finds her strength to be herself with the help of her mother, found family and learning the rights and wrongs. There was something about Keegan that will very much resonate with readers that will leave your heart ablaze.via Image ComicsJohnnie also lends his pencils and inks to this gorgeous comic, and I do mean gorgeous. Remember how I said this felt like a passion project? That’s what his art lends to the story as well. Every panel is tied together in glorious detail that beings the lore to life and extends the story to something that can stand by itself it wanted to. The facial expressions, the movement, the depth of the comic go so deep with Christmas’ art. We sink into this world filled with the emotions of the characters, the features of the gospels and everything in between. However, Christmas’ art would be nothing with Tamra Bonvillain’s colors. She sets the mood for this comic from the start. With every panel, she puts her own personal touch to it that blows you away. Bonvillain’s another one of my favorite colorists. The way she works with a range of different colors from any piece of the color wheel or spectrum is phenomenal. She melts them to fit into a story so magically. With Firebug, she keeps those sublime backgrounds and incorporations of the primary colors green, brown, orange and blues. She then introduces other colors to drive different aspects of the characters, sentiments, and passions from the characters, heartbreak and more.via Image ComicsAriana Maher does a fantastic job of placement in Firebug. Maher does a killer job in genuinely creating the storytelling from Christmas’ script. She places in a way where the narrative is in constant motion like you’re reading from a book of lore. Everything in this comic feels like its put together with such a genuine passion and love for what they do.Firebug is emotional, mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful. You’ll fall in love with the setting, the characters, the story and the creators who put it together. It’s seriously a comic that was made with fiery passion from all sides. Firebug will be available March 7th on Comixology and your local comic shop.center_img Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday after a prank involving a faked ax attack.Police were called to a gas station parking lot at Northeast Fourth Plain and Northeast Andresen Road at about 11 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a person wearing a motorcycle helmet and leather jacket attacking another person with an ax before running off, according to Vancouver Police spokeswoman Kim Kapp.A similar situation was reported to police at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday in the 600 block of Broadway. President Donald Trump banned the Chinese company earlier this year, but the government will reportedly start approving licenses for Huawei again soon. The government will begin approving licenses for US companies to reestablish partnerships with Huawei in two to four weeks, according to a Reuters report Sunday. This follows Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’ comment last week saying US companies can begin selling to the Chinese company “when there’s no threat to national security.”Trump signed an executive order banning Huawei from doing business in the US in May. He then lifted restrictions on the Chinese tech company at the end of June after having a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.Huawei’s blacklisting led to major layoffs at the company’s US research labs. Huawei and the Commerce Department didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.last_img read more

UAE gains Egypt Bahrain Tunisia loss

first_imgConflict in neighboring countries is ushering tourism into the UAE, with Abu Dhabi airports welcoming 9.4 percent more passengers in the first quarter compared to the corresponding period last year.International Air Transport Association figures showed that as Egypt and Tunisia arrivals fell by 6.2 over the same period, Dubai’s inbound tourism increased by up to seven percent compared to the first quarter in 2010, Gulf News reported.TRI Hospitality Consulting’s Middle Eastern branch found that the majority of tourism was redirected from Bahrain, with MICE travellers forced to host incentive trips outside the country.”Many are coming from Bahrain, this can be seen in hotels which have got an increase in requests from Bahraini companies to host conferences and meetings originally meant to be held in their own country,” the consulting Group’s managing director Peter Goddard said.Dubai’s accommodation sector saw an occupancy rise of 7.9 percent in January this year up to 76.6 percent while Abu Dhabi witnessed 60.9 percent of its hotels full compared to 50.2 percent in January last year, STR Global data found.”Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been affected positively from the unrest in the region; Dubai has seen a stronger impact on its tourism market than Abu Dhabi,” Mr Goddard added. The Bahrain government decision to axe its role in the Formula One scheduled to run from 13 March also played its part in diverting tourism into other regions in the Middle East, according to a research compiled by Dubai-based tourism agency, Utravel.
